All In One Security Gateway - Untangle

Untangle LogoMany people should be glad to know that an open source, all in one security appliance exists named Untangle. Although this is not news, it is to me. And frankly, I would probably not have implemented a Watchguard if I had known otherwise. Untangle also offers a “professional” support package if you are not confident with open source solutions or just prefer to have someone backing you up.

Untangle seems to have tons of neat features, but keep in mind that these AIO security appliances WILL slow your connection unless you have some beefy equipment running the system.

Untangle has all of the features of most enterprise all in one security appliances including:

Now, to the fun part. Version is 5.0.3 at this time of writing.

IOGEAR has released a hardware-based virtual desktop solution that lets users access their computers from any Internet connection without the need for managing and configuring software.

The PCPortal also allows users and IT pros to connect to a cluster of machines by interfacing the device with a KVM switch.

“In the event a computer is not functioning properly, users need to be able to access the machine to alleviate the situation, even when on-site assistance is not possible,” said Miranda Su, executive vice president of IOGEAR. “PCPortal’s ability to communicate with distant computers over an Internet connection makes it feasible for individuals to work on their PCs from anywhere, at anytime.”

The PCPortal device features a USB 2.0 Virtual Media Port, IOGEAR said, allowing Windows XP users to attach a USB Flash Drive and use it as if it were plugged into a local USB port. They can then transfer files and stream media between local and remote computers.

Microsoft gives away free developer software to students

DreamSpark
While we're not particularly used to hearing the words "free" and "Microsoft" in the same sentence, the software behemoth does offer a number of free utilities for download on its website. For example, there's SyncToy, Power Toys for XP, and Photo Story. Now Microsoft is also offering free downloads of its commercial developer tools. The only catch? You need to be a student in college or graduate school.

The programs available include:
Students can download full versions of these applications. They aren't limited versions of the full software like Microsoft Accounting Express. The promotion, which Microsoft is calling DreamSpark is available to any student no matter what their area of study. But right now the deal is only good in 11 countries: the US, UK, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Belgium.

You'll need a Windows Live ID to participate. And Microsoft will take steps to verify that you're really a student, so you need to enter the name of the school or institution that can confirm your status before you can download your program.

Macessity's LowKey Stand for Apple neat-freaks

Tidy, huh? If you're an iMac or Apple Studio Display owner then you'll see the immediate appeal of this LowKey Stand from Macessity. Constructed of 0.1085-inch thick steel "power-coated" to match your rig, it neatly hides your new slim Apple keyboard from view. There's also a powered 4-port USB port up front which helps to offset the stand's $60 price a tad.
